What is an OTDR?

An Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) is a fiber optic testing instrument used to evaluate the integrity of optical links. It injects a light pulse into the fiber and measures the light that is scattered or reflected back over time to create a trace (graph) of the link. This trace reveals events such as splices, connectors, macrobends, and breaks—along with their distance and estimated loss.

How it works

The OTDR sends short optical pulses into the fiber. As light travels, small amounts scatter backward (Rayleigh scattering) and strong reflections occur at abrupt changes (Fresnel reflections). By timing the return signal, the OTDR calculates distance, while the amplitude indicates loss or reflectance of each event.

Key specifications

Dynamic Range: Determines the maximum testable length and ability to see far-end events.
Dead Zones (Event/Attenuation): Minimum distance after a reflection where the instrument can resolve another event—critical for short drops/FTTx.
Pulse Width: Short pulses improve resolution on short links; longer pulses improve range on long links.
Wavelengths: Common test wavelengths are 1310/1550 nm for single-mode; 1625/1650 nm for in-service monitoring.

Typical applications

- Construction and acceptance testing of FTTx/backbone links
- Locating faults and breaks with distance-to-fault
- Measuring splice/connector losses and reflectance
- Documenting baseline traces for future maintenance

Best practices

Use launch and receive fibers to accurately measure the first and last events, select the appropriate pulse width for link length, and save standardized traces (SOR) for certification and future comparison.

For Fiber Contractors

We deliver fast, field-ready OTDR results that keep your build moving. On-site or lab-based testing with proper launch/receive fibers and acceptance documentation aligned to your FTTx and backbone project specs.

You get:
- Pass/fail vs. project thresholds
- Splice/connector loss and reflectance tables
- Breaks and high-reflectance events with GPS/distance notes
- As-built SOR traces + PDF summary + punch list
- Same/next-day mobilization in Kumasi/Accra; 48–72h lab turnaround

For ISPs and Operators

Improve reliability and SLA compliance with repeatable, trendable OTDR baselines. We document handovers, validate change windows, and support proactive maintenance using 1310/1550 nm and optional 1625/1650 nm monitoring wavelengths.

You get:
- Acceptance-to-maintenance baseline traces (SOR) and versioned repository
- KPI-aligned pass/fail and periodic audit reporting
- Event tables for splice/connector loss and reflectance
- Scheduled test windows, escalation-ready summaries, and trouble-ticket linkage
